Starting from June 2025, 60 portable laptop computers will be available in 47 community libraries (chitalishta) in the Global Libraries Bulgaria network, located in the northeastern regions of Shumen, Dobrich and Silistra. The computers have been donated, free of charge, by a partnership between the Global Libraries Bulgaria Foundation (GLBF), the BCause Foundation and Kaufland supermarkets.
The initiative to provide computer equipment in libraries for their users falls squarely within GLBF’s mission to support the inclusion of Bulgarians into the global information society and to improve their quality of life. Through its cooperation with libraries throughout the country to improve access to information, the Foundation aims to foster the creation of conditions for free and equal access to information, the Internet and electronic services, to promote information literacy, lifelong learning, civic participation, and local and community development, and to support the social integration of disadvantaged groups.
The Global Libraries Bulgaria Foundation works with a network of over 1,000 public libraries (regional, municipal and community level), covering 260 municipalities in the country. In many of these places, libraries are the only place with access to information resources and services for the local population. All libraries in the network have free access to the Internet and are equipped with computer, communication and peripheral equipment, which has been maintained over the years and, where possible, renewed. Thanks to the partnership with a local branch of an international IT company earlier this year, GLBF provided a further 18 laptops for 11 community libraries in the Stara Zagora region.
