Over 2,000 seniors have been trained in libraries as part of the Internet for All programme, which teaches the ways that mobile devices and the internet can be used to serve everyday needs.
Nearly 80 chitalishta and eight regional libraries across Bulgaria implemented the trainings, coordinated by Global Libraries Bulgaria Foundation and A1, the company that begin the programme six years ago.
The trainings are free and take place in small groups onsite. Participants come from a variety of professional and social backgrounds but are united by the desire to stay active and connected in the digital world, saying that the trainings have provoked their curiosity, helped communication with younger relatives through video calls and chat apps, and given them a sense of belonging to an active community.
“With the new round of Internet for All trainings, we continue to promote the digital literacy of generations. We believe that connectivity is key in today’s world, and that therefore the programme becomes a bridge between young and old, making technologies accessible to everyone. The new format provides not only practical knowledge, but also an opportunity for socialisation and sharing, which is highly valued by participants.“ – Illiyaa Zaharieva, Director of Corporate Communications at A1”
The programme includes twelve practical topics, including basic smartphone use and internet access, using communication apps and online services, and protecting personal data, recognising fraud and online safety. Participating libraries are provided with training videos, printed materials, information summaries, tablets and self-assessment tests.
